The Rebranding Trap: Why "AEO vs SEO" Is the Wrong Fight

Every few months, a new acronym lands in the marketing inbox and people assume it means throwing out everything they know. AEO. GEO. AI-mode search. Each one triggers the same reaction: panic, then a flurry of LinkedIn posts declaring that "SEO is dead."

Google has now said the quiet part loud. Its AI features developer documentation states plainly that the practices that help your content appear in AI Overviews and AI-powered features are the same practices that have always driven organic search performance. The guide does not introduce a parallel discipline. It extends the existing one.

We have audited 17 sites across 14 distinct domains since launching in May 2026, with scores averaging 23 out of 100 — a grade F across the board. The problem is not that these businesses are doing SEO wrong. The problem is that they have not yet applied those SEO fundamentals to the specific signals AI engines read. That gap is costing them citations, answers, and deals they never see happen.


What Google's Guide Actually Says: The Three-Layer Framework

Before mapping tactics, it helps to understand the structure Google uses internally. Based on the Google AI features developer documentation published on the Google Search Central site, optimisation for AI-powered features sits on top of three familiar layers:

Layer 1 — Crawlability and Indexing If Googlebot cannot crawl and index your content, no AI system downstream will see it either. This layer is unchanged from 2005.

Layer 2 — E-E-A-T Signals Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. These signals were already the axis around which quality rater guidelines rotated. For AI Overviews, they are the primary citation filter.

Layer 3 — Structured, Direct Language AI models extract passages, not pages. Content written in clear declarative sentences, with explicit definitions and structured headings, is more likely to be lifted verbatim into a generated answer. This is the layer where most B2B sites in Asia are failing.

The academic literature formalised this exact observation before Google did. In the 2024 KDD-accepted paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (arXiv:2311.09735), lead author Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues wrote that "we introduce Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), the first novel paradigm to aid content creators in improving their content visibility in generative engine responses." The study tested nine strategies across 10,000 search queries and found that adding citations, quotation-style statements, and fluency improvements increased source visibility in generative answers by up to 40%. The underlying mechanism is the same one Google's own guide describes: clarity and authority signal to AI that a source is worth citing.


The Evidence: Why "Still SEO" Matters More Than You Think

The Google Blog post on generative AI in Search confirms that Google's approach to AI Overviews was built on the search quality infrastructure already in place — not rebuilt from scratch. This is consequential because it means years of domain authority, structured content, and backlink work are not sunk costs. They transfer.

Search Engine Journal's ongoing coverage of generative search has tracked this convergence closely: the sites that rank well in traditional organic search are, with some structural adjustments, the same sites that surface in AI Overviews. The delta is not about starting over — it is about the last 20% of execution.

The GEO research paper (arXiv:2311.09735) is particularly useful here because it gives practitioners a testable vocabulary. The researchers identified that "authoritative" content — content that explicitly cites sources, names credentials, and structures claims — outperforms content that is equally accurate but written in a vaguer register. In a generative engine, being right is necessary but not sufficient. Being legibly authoritative is what earns the citation.

Six Steps to Close the Gap Today

Google's guide, the KDD 2024 research, and our own audit data converge on a short set of actions. None of them require abandoning your current SEO investment. All of them can be started this week.

  1. Audit your crawl coverage for AI surfaces first. Confirm that your key pages — product pages, comparison pages, glossary entries — are indexed and returning clean HTML responses to Googlebot. AI crawlers follow the same access rules. Use Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool for a quick check.

  2. Add a definition block to every major concept page. AI engines prefer to cite a clean, one- or two-sentence definition they can lift verbatim. If your product page does not contain a sentence that begins "[Product Name] is a…", write one today and place it near the top of the page.

  3. Add explicit author credentials to every article and guide. E-E-A-T is the citation filter. A byline that reads "Pei, Founder, Cyberg7 AEO, 10+ years in B2B SaaS" scores measurably higher than an anonymous post. If your content is currently unattributed, add authors retroactively and publish an author bio page with verifiable credentials.

  4. Restructure long prose into headed sections. AI models extract passages. A 1,200-word section under a single H2 is harder to cite than four 300-word sections, each under a specific H3 that names the concept. Audit your highest-traffic pages and split large blocks.

  5. Cite your claims with links in the running text. The GEO research found that adding citations to content improved generative engine visibility by up to 40%. Not footnotes — in-sentence links like this one. AI systems read citation presence as an authority signal.

  6. Run a structured AI visibility audit quarterly. Traditional SEO audits measure crawl health and backlinks. An AI visibility audit measures passage extractability, E-E-A-T signals, citation density, and schema completeness. These are different instruments. You need both.
