The click is disappearing — and most marketers haven't noticed
For twenty-five years, the goal of SEO was simple: get to page one, collect clicks. That model is breaking. When a B2B founder types "best AEO agency in Singapore" into ChatGPT or Perplexity, they don't see ten blue links. They receive a synthesized answer — and whoever is cited in that answer wins the consideration, whether or not they rank on Google at all.
We started running structured AI-visibility audits in May 2026 across B2B SaaS and agency websites in Asia. What we found was stark: across 17 audits spanning 14 distinct domains, the average AI-visibility score was 23 out of 100 — a Grade F. These were not amateur websites. Several had invested in traditional SEO for years and ranked on the first page of Google for their target terms. None of it translated into presence inside AI-generated answers. The problem isn't that these sites are bad. The problem is that they were built for a retrieval paradigm that is being displaced.
What AEO actually is — and how it differs from SEO
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — also called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) in the academic literature — is the practice of structuring content so that AI systems can extract, synthesize, and cite it when generating answers to user queries. The difference from traditional SEO is not cosmetic.

The distinction matters for budgeting, content strategy, and measurement. A site that dominates Google for "B2B lead generation Singapore" may score zero citations in an AI answer about the same topic. The algorithms are different, the signals are different, and the content requirements are different.
What the research and the platforms say
The academic framing for this shift came from a paper accepted at KDD 2024. Pranjal Aggarwal and co-authors at arXiv:2311.09735 wrote that "we introduce Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), the first novel paradigm to aid content creators in improving their content visibility in generative engine responses." That paper, published through arXiv in November 2023 and accepted at one of computer science's premier data-mining conferences, was the first peer-reviewed work to formalize what practitioners had been observing anecdotally: AI systems do not retrieve content the same way search engines do, and optimizing for one does not automatically optimize for the other.
Google itself has acknowledged the shift. Its developer documentation on AI features in Search describes how AI Overviews select source content, noting that pages should demonstrate expertise and provide clear, direct answers — signals that overlap with AEO but go beyond traditional on-page SEO. Google's guidance is explicit that structured, authoritative content increases the likelihood of being surfaced inside AI-generated summaries.
The industry reporting reinforces the urgency. Coverage in major tech publications tracked via Google News shows a consistent pattern: businesses that treated AI search as a future problem are finding it is a present one. Perplexity now handles hundreds of millions of queries per month. ChatGPT crossed 100 million weekly active users faster than any consumer application in history. These are not edge channels.
Our own audit dataset (17 audits, 14 domains, extracted 2026-05-26) shows that the median B2B site in our sample passes fewer than two of the seven structural signals that AI systems use to evaluate citability. The most common failures: no FAQ or Q&A schema, no clear entity definitions, no structured data on the author or organization, and page copy written for keyword density rather than direct question-answering. Sites like callbox.com.sg that have invested in content depth still tend to fail on schema and entity clarity — the layer that AI parsers rely on most heavily.
Seven concrete steps to make your site AI-citable today
The following steps are drawn from the GEO research framework, Google's AI features documentation, and our own audit findings. Each one can be actioned this week without a full site rebuild.

Audit your current AI citation rate. Ask ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity the top five questions your customers ask before buying. If your domain does not appear in the cited sources, you have a baseline gap. Record the date — you'll need it to measure improvement.

Add FAQ schema to every high-intent page. Use
FAQPagestructured data (JSON-LD) to mark up three to five questions and direct answers per page. AI systems parse schema markup to extract citable passages. Google's Search Central documentation confirms this directly. -
Write one direct-answer definition per core concept. Pick the ten terms most central to your product or service. For each, write a two-to-three sentence plain-language definition that begins with the term itself. Example format: "Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring web content so that AI search systems can extract and cite it when generating responses to user queries." This format is exactly what language models pull into answers.

Add an author entity block to every article. Include the author's name, role, credentials, and a link to a LinkedIn profile or about page. Google's E-E-A-T framework and the GEO research both identify author authority as a citation signal. Anonymous content rarely gets cited.

Replace keyword-stuffed introductions with direct answers. The first 150 words of each page should answer the page's primary question — not build toward it. AI systems weight the opening passage heavily when extracting summary content.

Cite your own data with dates. Proprietary statistics ("We audited 17 sites in May 2026 and found…") are highly citeable because they are original and verifiable. Generic claims without numbers get skipped. Include the data collection date every time.

Build topical depth, not topical breadth. A single page that comprehensively answers one question outperforms five thin pages covering related terms. The GEO paper found that citation rates increase significantly when a source covers a topic with greater depth and specificity than competing sources.
